Eardley’s rented cottage can be seen at the far left of the painting which is perched on top of the hill in the small fishing village of Catterline, Aberdeenshire. At the mercy of the elements, the cottages seem to be bracing themselves for a hard winter.
Joan Eardley an English artist but spent most of her adult life as an artist in Glasgow and then Catterline. Her preference was for everyday subjects such as children or the sea and coast line.
