This early print by Royds shows her ability to capture a scene in such a simple yet distinct manner. The strong black lines of the woodcut work well in describing the profiles of the young choir boys singing in the foreground.
Mabel Royds an English artist and printmaker is best known for her colourful woodcuts of flowers. Her technique was indebted to Japanese woodcuts. She moved to Paris and worked with the English painter, Walter Sickert, before travelling to Canada and teaching in Toronto. In 1911, she moved to Scotland and began teaching at Edinburgh College of Art, working alongside S. J. Peploe.
