Single sheet of gift wrap featuring a reproduction of an original wrapping paper design Design for Wrapping Paper (Bagpipe Player) by Edward Bawden from the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland.
This linocut design was made to be reproduced as wrapping paper. In this bold and distinctly Scottish design, the green checked lines reflect the tartan pattern on the piper’s kilt. Despite the simplification of the piper, he retains individuality and character.
Edward Bawden was a British painter, illustrator and graphic artist. He was a fine watercolour painter but worked in many different media. His work and career is often associated with that of his contemporary Eric Ravilious. Bawden’s graphic designs have been praised for their simplification to the essence of the subject, their directness and humour.
