Limited edition screen-print Magic Circles from The Haymarket Print Suite by Alan Davie. This screen-print encapsulates the symbolism everpresent in the artist’s work deriving from his deep interest in ritual magic, jazz rhythms and composition.

The Haymarket Print Suite, published in 1990, was the result of a collaborative project called ‘Platform for Modern Art’ undertaken by the National Galleries of Scotland, Art in Partnership Scotland and Scotrail. Alan Davie, John Bellany, Adrian Wiszniewski and Bruce McLean, four leading Scottish artists, were selected by Richard Calvocoressi, Director Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (1987-2007) and commissioned to create one of the four images that make up the Suite.

The artists were not given a specific theme for the Suite but were advised that the prints should be colourful and eye-catching to attract attention on the busy railway platform. The Suite was published in an edition of 30 and printed by Peacock Printmakers in Aberdeen on Arches velin 300gsm paper, each print is signed and numbered by the artist. A set was permanently framed to hang on the platform at Haymarket Station in Edinburgh. Unveiled in October 1990, the original set was on display there until 1999.

Alan Davie (1920-2014) was a Scottish artist and musician, was born in Grangemouth, near Edinburgh and studied at Edinburgh College of Art. Davie abandoned traditional methods of composition and subject matter and sought to free his art from premeditated decision-making. This approach owes much to the artist's interest in Zen Buddhism and there is also an analogy with jazz - Davie was a jazz saxophonist early on in his career.
