2022 edition of Studies in Photography: the journal of The Scottish Society for the History of Photography (SSHoP). This high-quality magazine-style journal of Studies in Photography considers how the Art community can respond to the issues raised by Russia’s war on Ukraine.

In a detailed article, author Christian Weikop views the current situation through the prism of Anselm Kiefer’s photographic work, and in particular his Occupations series. Bashabi Fraser’s ‘Writers Choice’ also pursues the theme of refugees’ experience, and our responsibility.

This high-quality magazine-style journal includes historical articles featuring the West Highland photographs of MEM Donaldson; Alvin Langdon Coburn’s Robert Louis Stevenson-inspired images of Edinburgh; and Dundee’s early rooftop photographic studios.

Current photographic practice is represented by the Indeterminate Objects (Flora) of Wendy McMurdo; and ‘New Contemporary’ images made by Scotland-based photographers Miriam Ali, Natalia Krezel and Zoe Hamill.

Also included are book reviews of Eric Watt’s Glasgow images and The Fish that Never Swam by Kirsty Mackay, alongside Victoria Crowe’s ‘Artists Choice’ and Malcolm Dickson’s obituary of Larry Herman.

SSHoP has been delivering a remarkable series of events, lectures, articles and scholarly texts on the world of historic and contemporary photography for over thirty years. Since 2016, Studies in Photography has been published twice yearly – and this 2022 edition again presents a stimulating blend of fascinating text and exciting visuals.
