Panoramic postcard featuring Comfort Blanket, 2014 by Grayson Perry. To accompany Grayson Perry | Smash Hits on show at National (Royal Scottish Academy) from Sat 22 Jul 2023 - Sun 12 Nov 2023.

Grayson Perry conceives his tapestry artwork Comfort Blanket as a metaphorical portrait of Britain as a ‘security blanket’, a place that people, who are running from unsteady environments, come for safety and stability.

Born in Chelmsford, Essex in 1960, Grayson Perry lives and works in London, UK. He has gone from taking evening classes in pottery to winning the Turner Prize, presenting television programmes on Channel 4 and writing acclaimed books. Always keen to do the unexpected, pottery allowed him the opportunity to indulge his fascination with sex, punk, and counterculture amongst other things, in the most unlikely and polite of art forms. Today, he is one of Britain’s most celebrated artists and cultural figures.
