53 x 60 cm stretched canvas reproduction of Children and Chalked Wall 3 by Joan Eardley from the National Galleries of Scotland collection.
The two children depicted in this painting are from the Samson family, who lived near Eardley's studio in the Townhead area of Glasgow. They feature in many of her paintings. The stencilled lettering and fragments of collaged newspaper imitate graffiti; the silver and gold papers are probably sweet wrappers. Eardley has depicted the children in a child-like manner, set against the debris of their everyday life.
Joan Kathleen Harding Eardley was a British artist noted for her portraiture of street children in Glasgow and for her landscapes of the fishing village of Catterline and surroundings on the North-East coast of Scotland. One of Scotland's most enduringly popular artists, her career was tragically cut short by breast cancer.
