Beautiful full-length portrait of Lady Montgomery by Sir Henry Raeburn from the National Galleries of Scotland collection.
This full-length portrait from Raeburn’s late career shows the newly married Helen Montgomery (née Graham). She is dressed in a simple, high-waisted dress typical of the elegant fashions of the Regency period.
Drawing on the traditions of ‘Grand Manner’ portraiture of the eighteenth century, Raeburn’s painting is both an evocative portrayal of a young woman beginning a new phase in her life and an impressively assured celebration of her marriage.
Scottish artist Sir Henry Raeburn lived in London and spent some time in Italy but returned to Edinburgh in 1787. Raeburn depicted some of the most popular and relevant people of his day, from Sir Walter Scott to William Stuart Forbes.
