Sir John Leighton is Director-General of the National Galleries of Scotland. He was formerly Director of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and Curator of nineteenth-century paintings at the National Gallery in London. He is the author of numerous publications and exhibition catalogues on nineteenth-century art.
