A5 (14.8 x 21 cm) single postcard featuring Étaples by Samuel John Peploe, part of the National Galleries of Scotland collection.

Peploe and fellow Scottish Colourist, John Duncan Fergusson travelled to France together for the first time in 1904, to work in Brittany. They returned to paint the north-coast towns and resorts of Dieppe, Étaples and Paris-Plage several times before Fergusson moved to Paris in 1907.

In this small painting Peploe has created a dense image of a street scene, constructed in thick, freely applied paint and using a palette based on shades of blue with red highlights.

Samuel John Peploe (27 January 1871 – 11 October 1935) was a Scottish Post-Impressionist painter, noted for his still life works and for being one of the group of four painters that became known as the Scottish Colourists. The other colourists were John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell and Leslie Hunter.
