A5 (14.8 x 21 cm) single postcard featuring Nature morte au bougeoir [The Candlestick] by Edouard Vuillard, part of the National Galleries of Scotland collection.

This painting shows Vuillard's obsession with pattern and texture. The designs on the wallpaper and tablecloth are depicted in great detail. However, each element in the painting is given equal weight and the whole composition is unified by little dabs of paint.

Vuillard often painted with a dry, sticky type of paint, known as colle on soft, brown cardboard. He would frequently leave some parts of the board unpainted, as can be seen in the bottom right area of this picture, to form the neutral tone.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist and printmaker.
