A5 (14.8 x 21 cm) single postcard featuring Nude Boy in a Bedroom by Christopher Wood part of the National Galleries of Scotland collection.
The 'boy' in this painting is one of Wood's lovers, the English artist Francis Rose (1909-1979). The work shows a hotel room in Tréboul, Brittany. Wood suffered from mental instability made worse by an opium habit.
This problematic side to Wood's character sometimes surfaces in his art. The tarot cards lying on the bed may allude to worries about money and love, and perhaps also to danger; in any event they seem to tell of his troubled state of mind.
John Christopher "Kit" Wood (7 April 1901 – 21 August 1930) was an English painter. In 1926 he met Ben and Winifred Nicholson who became close friends and whose fresh, consciously naïve style of painting influenced his own. Wood's most significant work was produced between 1928 and 1930.
