This is the portrait of Gertrude Vernon (1864-1932), commissioned by Lady Agnew’s husband, Andrew Noel Agnew, who was a barrister and barony of Lochnaw in Galloway. The popularity of the painting made Sargent become recognised and on demand as a portrait painter and also brought Lady Agnew some reputation as a society beauty.

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) is an American artist born in Italy who also travelled worldwide throughout his life. He studied in Paris where he developed his style, remarkable by his bold use of light in both portrait and landscape paintings.
