This serene skater is thought to be the Reverend Robert Walker, a member of the Edinburgh Skating Society and minister of the Canongate Kirk. The club, which was the oldest of its kind in Britain, usually skating on frozen lochs (lakes). Walker looks effortless, but this pose would have been recognised by fellow skaters as a difficult and sophisticated manoeuvre. This painting of the Reverend, showing a figure in action, is quite unlike other known portraits by Sir Henry Raeburn.
